The May Meeting 2006
by Margaret deWeese
Reverend Jordan Ellis presented information regarding a new capital venture
in Nanaimo: the International Composting Corporation, which produces a
product, called Marine Green Compost. It is currently being sold in bulk
on site at Duke Point, Nanaimo and in stores [bagged] such as Thriftys,
Canadian Tire, Borden Mercantile and Capital Iron. As an investor in the
company he is doing the circuit of garden clubs promoting the product and
showing its value to the rhodo grower.
The need for such commercial composting plants to reduce landfill
is obvious as municipalities on the island ship garbage to
other destinations. These destinations are now saying “No more!”
Alternative solutions are being sought as local governments are refusing to
accept any more green waste at the roadside. To do their part in helping
the environment many gardeners produce their own compost. For those who do
not, places like ICC give a safe end product, which adds little methane to
the atmosphere in its processing of forest and sea waste into compost
fertilizer. The talk was given free to the VRS apart from some gasoline
money. Reverend Ellis was presented
with a VRS sweatshirt and good wishes for the success of his company in
providing new technologies to process organic waste.
